Derisk to Deploy
Unleashing Scale Through Creative Financing, Partnerships, and Business Models
November 1, 2024
About
The Wharton Energy & Climate Club is excited to invite you to the 2024 Energy & Climate Conference at The Penn Museum on Friday, November 1st, 2024.
Successfully deploying clean energy technologies at scale will require dedicated change leaders to creatively reduce and share risks as technologies and markets mature.
Our conference will focus on sharing the evolving best practices and success stories around collaborations, capital stack innovations, and novel go-to-market approaches that are accelerating the equitable deployment of clean energy technologies.
2024 Schedule
Grab breakfast and check in before the opening keynote!
Brief remarks by the organizing team.
Luis Alcoser (GM, Chevron Technology Ventures) in conversation with Jim McNiel (Chief Growth Officer, TAE Technologies)
While investments in both climatetech companies and infrastructure as an asset class have exploded in recent years, there’s still a gap in funding first-of-a-kind climate technologies as they scale up from “first-of-a-kind” (FOAK) and “second-of-a-kind” to “nth of a kind” (NOAK) projects. Join our experts to learn about innovative capital models that address this gap and opportunities to partner across the climate capital stack to share and address risk.
- Jonah Wagner (Senior Advisor, DOE LPO)
- John Rapaport (Chief Investment Officer, Keyframe Capital)
- Manasi Desai, (Director, Lime Rock New Energy)
- moderated by Margaret Peloso (Global Climate Officer & Executive Director, Chubb Charitable Foundation)
As the climate crisis affects more lives, customers are demanding energy solutions that are cheaper, faster, and better than before. However, sustainable solutions in a nascent market face plenty of barriers and bottlenecks to adoption. Our experts will discuss innovative approaches to accelerating market adoption through partnerships, policy, business model innovation, workforce development, and more.
- Jennifer Fendrick (Director of Public Policy, KoBold Metals)
- Jeff Weiss (Executive Chairman, Distributed Sun and truCurrent)
- Gilbert Campbell (CEO, Volt Energy Utility)
- Jon Yoder (CEO, MN8 Energy)
- moderated by Nicolaj Siggelkow (David M. Knott Professor, The Wharton School & Co-Director, Mack Institute for Innovation Management)
New datacenters, domestic manufacturing, and electrification are driving an unprecedented surge in new electricity demand, with yearly 10-year forecasts growing by as much as 5x in parts of the U.S. What will happen to power prices over the next decade, and how will that affect our pathways to decarbonization? What new technology solutions and partnerships can help us meet this demand? Join our experts to find out!
- Taiil Kim (Global & Senior Director of Strategy, Business Development, and Innovation, Schneider Electric)
- Adam Keech (VP Market Design & Economics, PJM Interconnection)
- Frank Sturniolo (Senior VP, Fleet Governance and Oversight, Constellation)
- Matt Phelan (Director of Global Transformation, National Grid)
- moderated by Russell Sprole (Founder & Managing Partner, Virta Ventures)
The 130 million existing buildings in the US collectively cost $400 billion per year to heat, cool, and power. The technologies to reduce building emissions like heat pumps, clean energy, and energy efficiency solutions already exist — how can we deploy them quickly and equitably? Join us as our experts discuss the intersection of policy, investment, and technology in their efforts to decarbonize commercial and residential real estate!
- Lauren Salz (CEO, Sealed)
- Andrew Linowes (VP of Clean Energy and Infrastructure, JLL)
- Annie Gilleo (VP, The Ad Hoc Group)
- moderated by Rishika Ghosh (Senior Manager, Partnerships & Clean Energy Products, Philadelphia Green Capital Corp)
Grab lunch and meet local innovators featured in our innovation showcase!
Dr. Jennifer Wilcox, Presidential Professor of Chemical Engineering and Energy Policy, University of Pennsylvania
Scaling first-of-a-kind (FOAK) climate technologies requires navigating a host of unique obstacles. Beyond maturing a new technology, it requires building and educating a new market, navigating permitting and regulations, getting a blend of capital providers and partners on board, and more. Join our experts as they discuss their work towards overcoming these obstacles on the path from 1st to nth-of-a-kind.
- Supratim Das (Senior Manager, Product Strategy, Electric Hydrogen)
- Mary Dhillon (Strategy, Fervo Energy)
- Ram Ramprasad (Chief Commercial Officer, Twelve)
- moderated by Sid Radhakrishna (Founding Lead, Operators Guild Horizon)
In 2023, a record 75% of new electricity generation capacity built in the US was solar and wind. While this is cause for celebration, solar and wind alone will not replace “firm” 24/7 energy sources. Join our experts as they discuss challenges and advancements (technological, political, market design) needed to replace “dirty firm” capacity with “clean firm” energy sources (geothermal, hydrogen, etc.) while keeping our grid stable!
- Kelli Joseph (Senior Fellow, Kleinman Center for Energy Policy)
- Jim Robb (CEO, NERC)
- David Bromberg (CEO, Pearl Street Technologies)
- Lex Wolf (Partner, Climate Adaptive Infrastructure Fund)
- moderated by Christine Knapp (Program Manager, DOE Office of State and Community Energy Programs)
A transition to electric vehicles will require a strained electric grid to quickly become more reliable, affordable, and sustainable. Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technologies can connect energy stored in electric vehicle batteries to the grid, driving resiliency and savings. Our experts will discuss the latest advancements in V2X technology, the challenges and pathways to at-scale deployment, the role of policy and regulation, and more!
- Dave Bend (VP of Business Development and Client Growth, WeaveGrid)
- Julian Torres (Chief Investment Officer, Scale Microgrids)
- Melissa Chan (Senior Director of Ecosystem Development, Analog Devices)
- moderated by Enrique Glotzer (Managing Director, Power, Renewables, Energy Transition, FTI Consulting)
From chemicals to concrete to mining, the industrials sector is the backbone of our world and emits 30% of global emissions. In the US, we have a new chance to get it right; the Inflation Reduction Act recently sparked a manufacturing boom, with hundreds of projects and billions in funding announced. Join us as our experts discuss the technology innovations, partnerships, and policies paving the way to a net-zero industrials sector!
- Alexandra Frugone (Head of Market Development and Growth, BANR, BWX Technologies)
- Joshua Speros (Investment Manager, BASF Venture Capital)
- Theresa Christian (Market and Energy Analysis Director, DOE OCED)
- moderated by Somil Aggarwal (Host, CleanTechies Podcast)
